Finding, Hiring a Great Roofing Contractor

Finding, Hiring a Great Roofing ContractorWe can’t imagine anything more important that the roof over your head. Getting the right roofing contractor, at the right price, when that roof needs repair, is vital. Here are some tips to make that happen.

Seek referrals and reviews.

Turn first to those whose opinion you trust. Ask your friends, neighbors, family and co-workers what roofing contractor they used, how quickly the contractor responded and completed the work, how reasonable the price, and how close the final price came to the original quote.

Next seek the help of online review sites such as Yelp, Thumbtack, HomeAdvisor, Better Business Bureau, and others, that allow these contractors’ customers to rate and review their roofing work.

Important caveats about review sites and service marketplaces:

  • We strongly urge you to verify that the site forbids contractors to alter or remove bad reviews.
  • A contractor with nothing but five-star reviews is suspect. A few disreputable companies will pay for good reviews from folks who’ve never used the services. If the site can’t convince you that it has security in place to protect against that, don’t rely on its reviews. It is far better to hire someone with mostly four and five star reviews, and an occasional bad review to which the contractor quickly responded to make things right, than a company with all five-star reviews.

Verify Credentials

If your state requires licensing for roofing contractors, ask for the license number of any contractor you’re considering, and then verify through your state that the license is up to date. We encourage you to ask questions about insurance coverage as well: Does the contractor adequately insure each worker against injury while fixing your roof? Does the contractor’s Worker’s Compensation liability coverage at least meet the legal minimum requirement?

Demand an Expansive Warranty

While we realize not all contractors will offer this, a long-term warranty that covers that contractor’s work is crucial in protecting  you and your family against hefty out-of-pocket costs for repairs down the road. While damage to a roof caused by disaster might well be covered by a homeowner’s insurance policy, shoddy contractor work that results in a leaky roof five years later will not be. Should the contractor be unwilling to take responsibility, or worse yet, be out of business – the homeowner will be stuck with the cost of repairs.

We know that a damaged roof is a frightening event, but taking the time to check credentials, knowledge of local roofing codes, and references is a must.

Perhaps the most important advice we can give in choosing a roofing contractor: If the contractor pressures you to sign a contract, walk away.
